Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger was responsible for establishing April as the Month Of The Military Child in 1986, and the Department of Defense has honored his initiative ever since.
The Month of the Military Child (MOMC) recognizes and pays tribute to military families and their children for the daily sacrifices made, their commitment, courage, and unconditional support of our Armed Forces. During the MOMC, communities and schools acknowledge their gratitude to military students by highlighting, celebrating, and wearing purple. Why purple? If all the colors that symbolize each branch of the service are combined, the result is PURPLE!
During the month of April, schools hosted a variety of activities to recognize and celebrate our military children and families.
